July 28, 2021What would a pharmacist do in case of a computer shutdown? As a pharmacist or healthcare provider, what would you do if your computer system went down for hours? If your internet connection was down, what would you do? If your telephone lines went down, what would you do? These are situations that most people would find very funny, but with a pharmacy information system the reality is very different.
What would a pharmacist do in case of a computer shutdown?
One of the first things that you will do is check to see if there is a problem with the hospital’s system. There might be a problem with the patient’s records or the records of another individual who was using the identical pharmacy as you. This can cause problems for the hospital’s billing system. In some cases, there might be a problem with the information on file for a specific drug. If this happens, then the pharmacy technicians will need to access the hospital system to determine which specific drug it is and make any changes to that drug.

As soon as such a problem is detected, the Pharmacist on duty shall contact the IT department to address it. A pharmacy technician or pharmacist prepares and initiates the typical medical prescription/order.
It is important to note the amounts, pricing, and name of the drug supplied on the prescription form (in case of substitution).
After a shutdown of the computer system, all prescription/order medicines should be manually labeled. Immediate after the system has returned to regular operation, all prescription drugs should be input into the database. The pharmacy supervisor should examine all computer entries.
