FIRVANQ® FAQ
1How does FIRVANQ® works?
FIRVANQ® is an oral solution of vancomycin hydrochloride, which is an important ingredient in Clostridium-difficile treatment. It acts on bacterial cell walls to alter their permeability and kill bacteria. It is the first drug to contain this ingredient. As a glycopeptide antibiotic, vancomycin is a class A antibiotic and affects the permeability of bacterial cell membranes. It is used to treat enterocolitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus, and to treat diarrhea associated with Clostridium difficile.
So, basically Vancomycin Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by blocking glycopeptide polymerization through binding tightly to D-alanyl-D-alanine portion of cell wall precursor.
2Is FIRVANQ® available as tablet or capsule?
FIRVANQ® comes in 25 mg/mL or 50 mg/mL kits.
Each kit contains a bottle of vancomycin hydrochloride USP powder for oral solution and a bottle of grape‑flavored diluent for simple reconstitution.
3Can you take FIRVANQ® to treat Clostridium difficile without doctor order?
In order to properly diagnose FIRVANQ® for C. diff infection, a person should undergo a stool culture and blood test. These tests will determine whether the patient is harboring the bacteria that causes the disease. A stool sample may reveal the strain of bacteria that caused the infection.
4Can FIRVANQ® Cause Clostridium Difficile Colitis?
However, the drug can cause a recurrence. Some people with C. diff. can still use FIRVANQ® to treat the infection. The medication is effective for C. diff. Infections caused by staph or c. difficile occur in the colon. Infected individuals with colitis may need a higher dose of the drug.
