Write Down Your Goals
March 20, 2023Using Technology to Write Those Goals
March 21, 2023You might have thought it was a bit strange to give you this big pitch about the importance of posting your goals. Only to tell you to hold off. Well, in this post, we’re going to explain why. By sharing two powerful tools that we use for posting our goals publicly. The tool I’m using is called the life dashboard and while it might seem a little neurotic… it’s been an incredible benefit to me and to the numerous people around me who’ve adopted it at its simplest.
Life Dashboard
Life dashboard is like any dashboard. You might have in various pieces of software or websites you use, but represented in the physical world instead of using software to show numerous statistics, tables and charts. I use a simple whiteboard that can be erased, added to and modified. At any time. The components of that whiteboard are highly flexible.
You probably already have a few ideas for things that you could put on your own life dashboard.
- I have my wheel of life outlined in permanent marker so that it’s easy to fill in.
- A summary of the habits I aspire to and what triggers and it when I’m committed to doing each of them.
- A calendar of the days showing which days I successfully completed and which habits.
- A list of my six months and five-year goals, complete with check boxes.
- And finally, my core values or the values I aspire to live by every single day.
As I mentioned before, I have this whiteboard posted right in front of my bed. It’s the first thing, I see every morning and the last thing I see every day, furthermore, because it’s a simple whiteboard, it’s very easy to add or erase coloring on the wheel of life, update goals, keep tallies and just generally check in with myself periodically.
Whether or not you choose to create a massive three-foot whiteboard for all your goals values, and habits is up to you, if you prefer, you can do it on a piece of paper or of course, opt to print nothing more than your goals.
Only, you know, what’s best for you. Personally, I can tell you quite honestly that whereas, I used to be a little bit embarrassed by the somewhat odd practice when people peeked into my bedroom; the results don’t lie and I’m certainly not embarrassed anymore.
More on the contrary, when my friends see how much progress I’ve made towards my goals in such a short amount of time, how satisfied I am with my life, as a whole, and the meticulous way with which I’ve outlined my core values. It actually fills me with a deep sense of pride and accomplishment.
The way one chooses to keep their missions and goals and visible in their lives is reflective of their style as a high, right brain person involved in self-help.
Vision Board
A vision board is a physical representation of all that you want to manifest like life dashboard. It keeps your personal mission and goals in plain sight, which helps you see them through when you create a vision board and place it in a space where you see very often. You essentially end up doing short, visualization exercises all throughout the day,
Here is what you’ll need any kind of board. If you’re new to this, maybe start with something small, like 12 by 12 inch.
and you cover that board with paint or colored paper that you like very much.
Most importantly, you need to gather some magazines. That might have inspirational words, or images relating to your goals, leftover cards, books, photos, quotes song, lyrics images of places you would like to go, postcards from friends and just about anything that will inspire you towards your goals.
Requirements to make your own vision board
You’ll need scissors, markers, tape. Any kind of glue stick to help things stick to the board. If embellishments make you feel awesome, then go for it.
Add glitter stickers, colored tape or anything else. You feel like to really personalize your board.
Here’s how to make a vision board. First gather all of your supplies on a really big table, you will want to feeling of spaciousness and calm. I like to set some music going and a candle just to set the mood. When it comes to actually putting your stuff on the board; gather those photos and quotes and images and lay them out on the board in various ways.
Do you like them touching or do you like them with a space between them?
As for choosing what makes it into the final cut. Lay everything out before you start gluing, so you can get an idea of where you want everything to go.
You may be wondering about what exactly to put on your board. Put on your board anything that inspires and motivates you. You can’t make a mistake except for not doing one. This board is a reflection of your written mission statement and goals.
From that, decide what you want on your vision board, for example.:
I’ve had the goal to lead students to Paris, so I put an image of young people in front of the louvre on my board.
since I am committing to walking daily, I put a big old gym shoe on the board.
If I want to feel even more of the love, I already feel for my partner. I might include a photo of us having a wonderful time together. Looking at that photo brings back those loving feelings and helps me know what I’m reaching for, what you focus on expands.
So, think about what your goals are in the following areas. Think about family, love, friends, career, think about finances, home, travel, personal growth, spirituality. Think about your social life, health and anything else that matters.
Now you may be wondering if you should have one simple vision board or maybe a vision book with theme sections. If this is your first board, I’d probably start with just a simple board.
Some years. I like to have one made vision board and I can look at it every day in my office or my bedroom or the kitchen, some years, I make vision books so I can focus deeply on the areas that need more attention and focus, it’s totally up to you.
Theme sections in the book center on the specific areas of your life. For instance, say a new marriage or even the wedding will help you focus on how you want to feel on that specific day.
A career specific section of your vision book can help you work specifically towards a better attitude in the workplace or target your soon-to-be promotion.
A vision board is something I complete in one or two sittings. My vision book is a work in progress. Throughout the whole year, I even have a note in my kitchen reminding me to reach for that vision book instead of the food when I notice myself reaching for food for reasons other than body hunger
Do you do a vision book or a board alone or with friends?
I have done vision boards and books on my own. But as I am a pretty social person, I host a vision board gathering with one of my women’s groups in the first week of every new year.
Everyone in the group is committed to creating meaningful life and we want great things for one another. We gather, bring light snacks and beverages, and then we just get to work.
at first, we review our boards from the year that just passed and we celebrate all that has come to be.
We sit together thumbing through the magazine’s, cutting things out. Maybe passing a good quote to one another that might support where she is going. Where she said that she wants to be next. There are long periods of silence as we work separately, but together in creating our vision for the new year.
Some of us are adding to last year’s board, some of us are creating a new one.
This year, I committed to a vision book. So, my book was nowhere near done by the end of our four hours together. But I was off to a good start. When we left the session, we were focused and intentional and beginning our new year’s goals,
How often should I redo my vision board? Whenever it feels right. I often leave blank spaces on my vision board so I can accept new things as they appear in my life and add and rearrange during the year when I feel it.
You just know if you have a new goal, put it on the board, then every January I give the board a total refresh to get clear about what I want in that new year.
What do you think? Will you create a vision board? Maybe you’ve got one and you’ve put it aside for a while.
Bring it out. I hope you do one soon.
